Anti-Corruption Commission established - May 8, 2008

Anti-Corruption Commission established after passage of Act…
The House of Representatives has passed the long awaited anti-corruption Act. The Act now establishes the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission.

The passage of the act follows a report from the Joint Committee on Judiciary and good governance, endorsing the passage of the act.

The Anti-Corruption Commission will have the mandate to take appropriate measures and undertake programs geared toward preventing investigation and prosecution of the act of corruption and the benefit of its eradication.

The act was sent to the National Legislature in August last year, but was delayed due to some sticky issues concerning the power of the commission.

Meanwhile, Maryland County Representative, Bhofal Chambers has filed a motion for reconsideration on section 3.2, which states that the Commission shall also have the expediency to discharge all of its functions in accordance with the law.

According to Rep. Chambers, the word ‘expediency” undermines the essence of section 3.2 and therefore should be removed.
