Elliot Page has condemned Texas government officials for saying medical care for transgender youth is child abuse.

The ‘Juno’ actor – who came out as transgender in December 2020 – has spoken out after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said earlier this week that hormone therapy, puberty blockers and others Gender-affirming types of health care for trans youth are forms of child abuse.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott added that “prompt and thorough investigations” into gender-affirming care for trans youth would take place.

In a statement to Variety, Elliot said, “I am horrified by the inhumane and downright dangerous statements by the Governor and Attorney General of Texas.

“Trans youth deserve gender-affirming care and should be able to live their true authentic selves without fear or oppression. I stand with trans youth and their families.”

Gabrielle Union also spoke out against the new laws, with similar legislation being passed in Florida.

She tweeted: “This is where we are.

“We shot in front of dangerous and horrible a long time ago. The rubber hit the road, so who’s standing side by side in this fight? Who’s really giving *** and who on this performative bs? Let’s see. (sic) “

Prominent trans actor Jen Richards has also criticized politicians for their proposals.

The ‘Better Things’ star wrote on Twitter: “Texas has declared that the type of care recommended by all major medical and pediatric associations, with decades of evidence of effectiveness, and provided by physicians in full cooperation with parents…is child abuse.”

Richards added: “We know what the outcome will be. Because trans people exist, always have existed and always will exist, it just means that young trans people will be more at risk, more vulnerable, at home and at school. They will be deported or run away and suicide rates will skyrocket.”
