With a new format and two exciting new teams, the Indian Premier League is back this weekend.
Last year, the second pandemic-disrupted season in a row concluded with the Chennai Super Kings winning their fourth title, putting them just one behind the Mumbai Indians, the most successful team in the country. competition history.
Mumbai leads the absolute bets, but a new tournament brings with it the possibility of an upheaval at the top.
New franchises Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants are 11-1 and 12-1 to climb to the top of their debut season, but even if they don’t go all the way they are sure to provide plenty of entertainment.
Led by Hardik Pandya, Gujarat have also snapped up Rashid Khan and the talented Lockie Ferguson are expected to lead their attack.
Lucknow, which would have entered its first season as the most expensive IPL franchise ever, landed the huge signing of KL Rahul and installed the experienced Andy Flower as their manager.
But while both are exciting prospects, it remains to be seen whether they have the depth to go the distance in a competition that will now kick off with two groups of five teams.
Each team will play each of the other teams in their section twice, an already assigned team from the opposite group twice and the rest of the teams from the opposite group once.
This is an additional 14 matches over the previous format, although this time around they will be held only in Mumbai and Pune to limit travel.
Defending champions Chennai will certainly catch the eye of punters but have lost experienced players Faf du Plessis and Shardul Thakur, while MS Dhoni will no longer be the team’s captain.
Delhi Capitals are also high in betting but could start the season on the back foot with David Warner and Lungi Ngidi among the absentees at the start, while the fitness and availability of key bowler Anrich Nortje remains a major concern.
One team that had a brilliant pre-season auction was the Rajasthan Royals and they are worth the luck at 8-1.
They are arguably in the trickier of the two groups, but should be seasoned by the time the knockout stage rolls around and they’ve staged a deadly bowling attack with Trent Boult, Ravi Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal in the side.
Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson, meanwhile, are a capable upper order and there’s strength further down the batting lineup in Shimron Hetmyer and Jimmy Neesham.
Those who like the Rajasthan look to go all the way might also consider backing paceman Boult to take the most wickets in the IPL and secure the Purple Cap for the first time in his career.
Although far from barnstorming with just 13 wickets in last year’s IPL, he shone with the same number of scalps in the T20 World Cup in November, helping New Zealand to the final .
As for Cap Orange, bettors could do worse than back the ever-reliable Rahul, who has done half a century in four of his last five T20 internationals for India and will be the main source of runs for the new Lucknow boys.
Rahul scored 626 points in 13 games for the Punjab Kings last season, dropping just nine points behind top scorer Ruturaj Gaikwad.
