Neil Patrick Harris doubts he can reprise the role of Barney Stinson in ‘How I Met Your Father’.

The 48-year-old actor played the character in the comedy ‘How I Met Your Mother’ between 2005 and 2014 but believes his alter ego’s return in the spin-off would be difficult because of her brash, feminist personality.

Speaking to ‘How I Met Your Father’ star Hilary Duff in the latest edition of his ‘Wondercade’ newsletter, Neil said: “As for coming on your show (insert joke here), I’m worried .

“Barney’s antics, his overt delusions of grandeur, would probably get everyone in trouble. So unless he changed his ways or joined a convent (insert joke here), I don’t know if it’s in everyone’s best interest.”

Hilary agreed with Neil’s feelings about Barney and joked he’d probably be in jail in 2022 – although she suggested Francia Raisa’s character in ‘How I Met Your Father’ was inspired by the character.

The 34-year-old star said: “I don’t know what you guys think, but I’m pretty sure Barney would be…in jail in 2022.

“Since we live in a world where women come to power, I guess that’s why they made (Valentina, a Barney character) a woman!”

Meanwhile, Hilary recently admitted she was hesitant to take on the role of Sophie in the comedy spin-off.

She explained: “I got a call from my manager saying there was this project they wanted me to discuss. Then I heard the title and I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? What?!

“The original series is so, so loved and was so perfect that I’m like, ‘Ohh, I don’t want to reboot.’ I was a little nervous about the sitcom because I’ve never done multi-camera, but I read the script and it was everything you want a comedy to be.”
