Overview of bets

The 2022 Oscar nominations raised as many questions as they answered when they were announced on Tuesday.

The Power of the Dog, a Western drama from Netflix starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, fared the best with 12 nominations, including every major category you’d want to see a Best Picture contender in.

Bookmakers strongly desire to land at least two gongs. Director Jane Campion, who hasn’t directed a feature film since 2009, is a 1-5 favorite to take best director, while Australian Kodi Smit-McPhee has every chance of picking up the Best Supporting Actor award.

There were surprises in the list, but frustratingly, they mostly made the betting markets more one-sided than more competitive. Lady Gaga looked like a live contender for Best Actress for her role as Patrizia Reggiani in The House of Gucci, and had been the second favorite at awards as short as 5-2, but was not nominated.

The Academy’s dislike of singer-turned-actress was also evident in the fact that Jennifer Hudson was also left off the list for her brilliant portrayal of Aretha Franklin in Respect. That left room for Kristen Stewart after playing Princess Diana in Spencer, but Nicole Kidman is leading the markets for her role as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos.

Will Smith is another jovial cut-price in the Best Actor category for his entertaining portrayal of tennis’ most famous dad, Richard Williams, in King Richard.

Sci-fi epic Dune seemed to be having a good run after beating The Power of the Dog 11-8 in BAFTA nominations and starting well in announcements, but its ten nominations oddly didn’t include one for the director. Denis Villeneuve, which would seriously count against him being a Best Picture contender.

Kenneth Branagh’s superb drama Belfast picked up seven nominations, the same number as Stephen Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, but none seem likely to win the top accolade ahead of The Power of the Dog.

At this point, it’s advisable to take the best price you can find for The Power of the Dog as it’s hard to justify an upset.
