A fortnight ago, history researcher Prasad Sudhir Tare checked his email early in the morning and saw that a museum in France had sent him a thumbnail of a painting by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj that was previously unknown in India. “At that moment, I felt like I was standing in front of the king. I paid for my obedience. I was overwhelmed to think of the artist who had come before Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and had done the work, ”says Tare, member of Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal.

The Golconda-style painting was done when the Chhatrapati was visiting the ruler of Golconda in 1677. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is seen standing, his full figure shown in profile with a long angarkha, a head covering adorned with pearls and gold , and a dagger at his side. “The beauty of these paints is that they use natural colors and small amounts of real gold, and show us what clothes and weapons were like back in the day,” Tare explains.
