Local ski champion Daisi Daniels picked up a bronze medal for his third place finish at the British Alpine Championships in Tignes, France.

The teenager competed in all four disciplines – downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom – throughout the junior and national championships, which took place from March 27 to April 3.

Daisi, of Whitworth, was third overall at the national championships, where she moved up to fifth international in the giant slalom and second in Britain. She also placed third British woman at the National Super G Championships as well as third British woman at the National Junior Downhill Championships.

She said: “I’m very happy with these results because I haven’t had many opportunities to train in Super G this season and it was also my first time doing downhill.

“The national giant slalom championships went pretty well. The course was rutted and difficult due to the weather. The second run was really good and I managed to move up to fifth international and second British, which I’m very happy with because I finished third in the race behind a French and a Swiss.

“Thank you to my sponsors Fortvale, HRigg Properties and the Winter Sports Foundation for helping to support the trip.”

Despite the theft of four pairs of skis, Daisi raced down the slopes with rescue kits in the slalom at the Junior Nationals.

She added: “I had to skip the slalom inspection to go and prepare a backup set from a few seasons ago. Unfortunately, I fell, but I spent the rest of the afternoon being a detective and asking for information on the whereabouts of my skis.

“I woke up pleasantly surprised to have my skis back. I then competed in the giant slalom on the unprepared skis back, but fell again. I learned a lot and I will take up the challenges to be back next year!

The 19-year-old Beech House alumnus competed at the 2022 FIS Alpine World Junior Skiing Championships in Panorama, Canada last month, skiing in the disciplines of alpine combined, super-G, giant slalom and slalom.

Despite a “disappointing” performance, Daisi says she still had “a fantastic experience”.

Daisi placed 44th in the Super G and 43rd in the giant slalom and did not finish the second run of the slalom due to her crossed spikes.

She said: “The Super G was a tough event for me as I haven’t had the opportunity to train a lot this season.

“I was doing pretty well in the alpine combined – a super-G series followed by a slalom series – until, unfortunately, I fell inside.

“I had a good first run in slalom and skied well in the steep slope, but I got a DNF.

“I felt that I had learned a lot from the giant slalom. I was particularly looking forward to this event and ended up with a 43rd position which was disappointing.

“I know I didn’t ski my best, but I was happy to come away with lessons learned, knowledge and a fantastic experience.”
