Round five preview

The draw for the fifth round of the Scottish Cup has sparked some interesting competition and the potential for some upsets.

Rangers should ease their trip to League Two Annan, while Celtic have the home advantage against Championship side Raith.

However, one tie that doesn’t seem so straightforward for the Premiership outfit is Hibernian’s clash with Arbroath.

The Red Lichties top the second tier table and they are pushing hard to play SPL football next season. There is no coincidence in the position of Dick Campbell’s men and their performances have certainly justified a run that has seen them lose just one of their last 17 games.

Sure, the part-timers are stepping up to class to take on Hibs, but this matchup seems to be shaping up well for Arbroath. The Hibees were embroiled in a grueling clash at Ibrox on Wednesday, and rookie boss Shaun Maloney must now decide whether to freshen up his squad or select a potentially jaded side.

Either way, the Hibs have hardly been in sparkling form. That midweek loss to Rangers left Maloney’s men six SPL games without a win and they even needed extra time to eliminate League One Cove in the previous round of this competition.

Hibs can be sure of a chilly welcome, both from Arbroath and the weather by the North Sea, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the Hibees were blown away.
