Overview

Min Woo Lee dominates the Australian PGA Championship market – he’s set for top 11-2 prize – and the Scottish Open champion will get attention at the start of the Royal Queensland Golf Club, Brisbane .

Lee is a 23-year-old with a bright future, but the odds are tight for a 120-runner event that should take place under perfect scoring conditions. Sunny, calm weather is forecast for all four days, putting pressure on Lee’s putter. Min Woo often goes through periods of flattening with his putter – he would be the first to admit his weakness is on the greens – and this week’s setup should be a severe punishment for any poor flatstick work.

Investing back and forth at juicier odds is arguably a better tactic than backing the favorite. Elvis Smylie, Michael Sim and Jordan Zunic are calling on three Australians who could give Lee’s supporters something to worry about.

Smylie should be inspired by Cameron Smith’s record-breaking performance at the Sentry Tournament of Champions last week. Smylie and Smith are good friends – the teenager stayed at Smith’s in Jacksonville for a week in 2019 and golfed at The Concession – and the assumption in Australian golf circles is that Smylie will grow up to be a superstar.

Last year, Smylie finished second in the Tour of Australasia twice, as well as a third time. He was quarter-finalist of the 2020 Australian Amateur at Royal Queensland and knows the track extremely well. This advantage is further reinforced by the fact that Mike Clayton, the course designer, will be Smylie’s caddy this week.

Sim, a four-time winner of what has become the Korn Ferry Tour, was runner-up at the 2010 Farmers Insurance Open and was a star in the United States until fitness and fitness were gone. The 37-year-old plays on his home tour these days and has won the Queensland PGA Championship 2020. Both of his Aussie Tour wins came in Queensland, where he lives. After winning the strokeplay section of the Gippsland Super 6 by three strokes last time around, Sim can be expected to fight in Brisbane.

Three-time Australasian Tour champion Powerhouse Zunic won the 2018 Queensland Open. He lost in the 2017 Aussie PGA playoffs to Smith. Zunic lost in the Gippsland Super 6 final just before Christmas and could do better on Sunday. The action begins at 9 p.m. UK and Irish time Wednesday evening.
